What’s working…

The Houston flooding conversation was great.  It was informative and entertaining, and relatable enough for the rest of us.  It also shows us that you can do news and not just topics.

The baltimore violence open was also great.  Sound, good story, a confident lead.

You are talking in themes more…violence, race, etc.  It makes the show flow better and will better set you up to talk based on your beliefs rather than just doing news story one offs.

….

What needs some attention…

The themes are they but you’re not quite linking them yet.  In one hour you went from liberals segregate to Baltimore violence/race to NFL/race to Chicago/race, but treated each individually.  Look for those common themes that you are starting to build in, so that you can make one story link to another.  When you do that, you’ll rise above individual stories, as Rush does.

Continue to work to get your main point and opinion out as early as posible.  You’ll hear in the Baltimore examples below that you had a great open and a fantastic point, but the point came much later.

In the McDonalds visit example below (Example 3) you are confident because it’s your story and your take.  Your voice is lower, and you really own the story.  Lets work to get that same lower, more confident sound in all the stories you do.  This is where working with John and Phil to really focus your material should help a lot.

When you do news stories, always try for the person experiencing the story rather than the expert or reporter.    You can do the facts better than they can almost all of the time.  And they won’t pull emotion out of a participant or victim like you can.  Always book for the person in the middle of the story, and settle for the expert if you have to.
