KS Live September 2014

What’s working…

Great topic selection:  money ground along the Rio Grande; the kid taken from mom in Illinois.

Michael and Roger are getting into topics more quickly and more plainly.  The show sounds more relevant and topical.

What needs some attention…

It’s still taking a while for Michael to get to his main point, even as he is starting the topic faster.

The music and tangents are still more distracting than they need to be.

Often Michael’s comments aren’t much more than the talking points we hear in other shows and other media.  They should be more insightful and unique.

Recommendations…
1) In show prep, Michael should ask “what’s the thing about this that’s driving me crazy” or ‘whats the thing about this that people just need to understand” and then make sure that he starts a topic immediately after the music, and is making his real point within the first minute.  Then he and Roger can spend the rest of the segment backing up the point, explaining it, etc.
2) The music is not working the Michael intends.  He should drop it for now and we need to think about better ways to use music.
3) Michael slips into talking points a little too often.  This is also a prep thing: he needs to find the thing that gets HIM all excited about each topic and then explain or call out or complain or story tell from there.    That will help keep his content unique.

Audio Examples…
Talking points.  Immigration reform…
.
Taking too long to get to the real point.  Great topic start with report and music, but then Michael doesn’t focus…
.
Good segment and good insight from Michael.  A MN clinic closing its doors…
.
Michael being very insightful but also distracting with music.  The story of two states fighting over the fate of a kid…
…and then about two minutes later, Michael calls out Governor Nixon, which he should have done within the first minute or so…
