2. ANALYSIS
EX SUBTITLE 1
There is something really magnetic about Jason’s style. The tone of his voice, the casualness with which he speaks. His fantastic and dry sense of humor, always right there in the background.
Here is a great example of his style and sense of humor. And this also happens to be an example of the “magic voice” that pops in from time to time unannounced and un-introduced…
Jason 01 empathy and magic voice humor
And this is a great example of Jason actually explaining, helping us understand something. A few seconds in he says “here’s the truth…” and what follows that is Jason gold…
Jason 02 explain drug legal still
EX SUBTITLE 2
But there is a missed opportunity. His comments and point of view are always negative. Like griping. Everything is wrong, always. He’s like a better version of the old white guy conservative hosts like Hannity and Levin: he makes sense, but after awhile (and especially on a sunny day when everything else seems to be going right) you just have to change the station. It’s too much. And looking at the ratings above, there is a good possibility that that is exactly what is happening.
Here is an example of Jason stating the obvious, and neither explaining nor saying anything that his audience doesn’t already know. And this is also about downtown Seattle, where much of his audience probably ventures as little as possible…
Jason 03 death from legal drugs
I would never suggest that Jason do “happy news”; that would be worse. What I recommend is that Jason look for little victories and little heroes: moments where everything went his way, or the way he thought they should go. And look for people actually making progress and having success in his world. Especially someone who stands up to the monolith of the left and wins. Maybe the win is against a city council or school board, or in the legal system. But someone who is taking action and it’s working.
2. RECOMMENDATIONS
Dan in reaction, thoughtful mode for the time being. Not leading stories, and not worrying about "expert" mode
No segment longer than 3, and 2.30 is even better.
Reset EVERYTHING longer than 2 minutes.
Keep it up with the stories before all the interviews, and add them before Book.
